working hard for Broxtowe

Hello again,
I hope you don't mind me sharing some of my photographs of yesterday's 70th anniversary of D Day. As the Minister for Veterans I had the great privilege and honour of attending a number of ceremonies.
In particular the events at Ranville will stay with me forever; I felt deeply proud to be British, totally humbled in the company of those who had shown such bravery and courage and moved to tears at the memory of the sacrifice made by so many.
Ranville was the first town to be liberated following the Normandy Landings, by members of the 6th Airborne Division of the 13th (Lancashire) Parachute Battalion.
Yesterday, the Regiment had organised an especially large number of their D Day veterans to gather in the town.
Ranville marked the 70th anniversary of D Day with ceremonies at their memorial, a Church mass and then a service of remembrance in the British cemetery. I attended all the events laying a number of wreaths and taking the opportunity to spend a good part of the morning talking with D Day veterans.
I also attended the international ceremony on Sword Beach which ran well over an hour late so I missed the start of the Veterans tea party in Arromanches. I did make the end of the service where apparently I was seen singing Auld Lang Syne!
I think it is worth recording that the Queen attended the beating of the retreat on Tuesday, the State Opening of Parliament on Wednesday and is today on her third long day in France. That's a tough programme for anyone but at 88 the energy and good humour of the Queen is remarkable.
Home to the Hemlock HappeningI failed to bring some of the glorious Normandy sunshine to today's Hemlock Happening which I helped to open this afternoon. There is a good turn out of stalls (including our excellent Pulp Friction). Thanks as ever to Bramcote Councillor and Broxtowe's Mayor, Stan Hepinstall who continues to be the driving force behind the event. The Happening ends this evening with Fireworks.
