working hard for Broxtowe
www.annasoubry.org.ukE-newsletter| August 12 2013
Hello again,
I had a good visit to Nottingham Prison on Friday to see some of the improved facilities, especially in relation to the education and health needs of inmates. Despite working as a criminal barrister for fourteen years, before being elected in 2010, and visiting many a client in prison, I had never been in a cell before!
Finally, thank you to everyone who came along to the “Meet the Team” event in Kimberley and a particular welcome to new subscribers from Kimberley to this email newsletter.
as ever,
Anna
I also have a long list of residents' complaints about all manner of matters, including the need for higher fencing and better communication. There is another very serious matter which I will raise concerning properties on Lower and Fletcher Road, which are subject to compulsory purchase orders. In fact it is more of an option on small plots of front gardens but the effect is very serious, namely that mortgage lenders will not lend, meaning they are almost impossible to sell. For some reason this has only recently come to light.
I am meeting residents on Lower, Fletcher and Albert after the meeting with Councillor Collins and I hope I will be able to give them some positive news.
Finally, full credit to Queens Road resident Alison Dobbs who has made terrific progress with the tram constructors to resolve a large number of residents' concerns. Last weekend's Strelley Village public meeting HS2 consultation opens
The public consultation on the HS2 route through Broxtowe has opened and closes in January.
Having attended last Saturday’s meeting at Strelley Hall where villagers made their opposition to the route clear, I undertook to do a regular HS2 newsletter. It provides important information on the public consultation and planned exhibitions of the plans. I have written to HS2 asking for exhibitions in Trowell, Nuthall and Toton.
Meanwhile I support Strelley Villagers who want a full tunnel as opposed to the planned boxed tunnel outlined in HS2's preferred route.
I visited the City Hospital to see a variety of Departments, in particular the Stroke Unit, having met with a number of constituents concerned about the level of service.
Huge strides have been made over the years to get victims of strokes straight into specialised units, not Emergency Departments. As such, there’s a good argument to have a new Stroke Unit at the QMC right next to A and E. The City unit have a great team of staff but it is clear their current accommodation is tight.
I also visited the Radiotherapy Unit and then went on to see a new project to assist frail elderly people coming in for surgery in the weeks before their operation.
It is a new idea and appears to be very successful. The project was started thanks to funding by Nottingham Hospitals Charity. It was a pleasure to meet Barbara Cathcart who heads it up on the City site; Nottingham Hospitals is a longstanding charity raising millions of pounds to improve patient experience, whether it is artwork in seating areas through to the project I saw. If you would like to donate or help in any way please contact Barbara by clicking here.
My mother worked in the NHS for 40 years as a radiographer and I am confident the equipment at the City Hospital would have "blown her away"! Save our Green Belt - important information on how to have your say
The public inquiry into Broxtowe Borough Council’s plans for development in the constituency opens at 10:00am on Tuesday 15th October until the Thursday or Friday. There will then be a break for half-term and the sessions will recommence on Tuesday 5th November- again they will run for the week, possibly onto Friday. The inquiry or 'hearings' will be held at Nottingham Central Methodist Mission, 22 Lower Parliament Street in Nottingham.
I plan to attend and speak at the relevant hearings. Information on how to take part is available on the Save our Green Belt page of my website (click here and then scroll to the bottom of the page to the attachments). Email me if it is quicker and easier!
I should add that written representations carry the same weight as representations made orally. All statements, for both oral and written representation matters, should be sent to the Programme Officer, Carmel Edwards, by 1pm on Thursday 19th September 2013. These can be sent to: Ms Carmel Edwards, C/O Nottingham City Council, Loxley House, Station Street, Nottingham, NG2 3NG or via e-mail to: [email protected]
Residents and shops hit by bus route mergerNottingham City Transport’s Number 13 bus will be merging with the number 14 from September 1st, leaving residents along the Queens Road East area without a return service into Beeston town centre. Residents will still be able to catch the Orange Line Number 36 into Beeston but I am told there is no bus back - not good if you have a load of shopping! So, bad news for residents and Beeston’s shops which are already struggling because of the tram works.
I have complained to Nottingham City Transport and have also written to Cllr Kevin Greaves at the County Council; I will keep you informed of their responses.
Kimberley Butchers to close - Broxtowe agree to meet to discuss plans to secure the future of our towns.Kimberley’s family butchers, which has traded in the town for nearly six decades is set to close when owner, Michael Woodcock, retires, and brother Ronald moves to work at the butchers in Newthorpe.
This is another blow for Kimberley and will form part of my submission to Broxtowe Borough Council who have agreed to meet with me to discuss the future of our town centres.
The Government has already given £150,000 to help rejuvenate and regenerate Stapleford, Beeston, Kimberley and Eastwood and I am keen to know how the money is being spent.
Boots have very kindly offered to provide top level advice and assistance, notably in Beeston, and I need to be sure Broxtowe is willing and able to turn around our towns.

Next Saturday sees another "office" wedding when my brilliant caseworker, Emma Martin, marries Benjamin Youd. They will be living in Beeston. Unfortunately, I am on holiday next Saturday so will miss Emma's big day.
I will send out a newsletter whilst I am away, but as you might imagine my family is "banning" me from too much work on our two week break!Anna Soubry MP, Barton House, High Road, Chilwell, NG94AJ
